Phonics

At Grove House Primary School we aim for all our children to become fluentconfident readers who are passionate about reading. We understand the importance of reading in developing independent life-long learners.

We can achieve this together through:

  • Read Write Inc, a program to help to your child read at school
  • Daily story times to promote a love of reading for pleasure
  • Inviting reading areas where children are able to access to a wide range of books at school and at home

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc is a systematic synthetic phonics program which is used to teach children to be fluent readers. All teachers and support staff  from nursery use Read Write Inc to teach daily phonics lessons.

Children are taught to read by learning sounds in speed sounds sessions which are broken down into three sets:

Set 1
The sounds are taught in the following order together with rhymes to help children form the letters correctly and instantly recognise sounds ready for blending.

Set 1 Speed Sounds order and rhyme

Set 2

When children are confident with Set 1 sounds they move onto Set 2 sounds

Set 3

Watch the video below to listen to how to say the sounds correctly!

Fred Talk:

Children learn to blend sounds with the help of Fred the Frog. We call this ‘Fred Talk’.

Nonsense words (Alien words)

As well as learning to read and blend real words children will have plenty of opportunities to apply their sound recognition skills on reading ‘Nonsense words’. These words will also feature heavily in the Year One Phonics Screening check in the summer term.

Storybook lessons

Following the speed sound session, children will the have their story book session. Children work in pairs to read books containing sounds they already know. The focus of these sessions is to develop children’s fluency, prosody (expression) and comprehension skills.

Home reading books are matched to the book children read in their story books sessions.  Reading books are changed on a weekly basis.

Assessment:

In the summer term in Year 1, children will complete the Phonics Screening Check. From Reception, we continually assess children’s sound knowledge, ability to blend sounds and read fluently. From this, we are able to identify where children may need additional support. This will most likely be through 1:1 tutoring sessions.
