Intent
At Grove House Primary School, children will be inspired to develop their knowledge and skills and experiment in order to become confident and innovative artists. Children are given every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history.
Implementation
Our Art and Design scheme supports pupils to meet the needs of the national curriculum end of key stage attainment targets, and has been written to fully cover the National Society for Education in Art and Design’s progression competencies. We follow Kapow Primary which is an Artsmark partner, inspiring children and young people to create, experience and participate in great arts and culture.
Our children will cover four topics which they will revisit from the Early Years to Key Stage two in order to build on their skills and knowledge. They will become proficient in drawing, painting and mixed media, sculpture and 3D, and craft and design techniques, using sketchbooks to experiment and refine ideas. Children will be able to research and reflect on the work of artists, craft makers and designers using a bank of vocabulary. They will also be able to reflect on their own work and that of peers.
At Grove House, Art and Design is taught through continuous provision in the Early Years Foundation Stage which is consistently modelled to children and aims to spark joy and lay a strong foundation of early skills. Key Stage One and Two will participate in weekly lessons for alternating half terms with Design Technology. Art is evidenced in floor books and sketchbooks and monitored by planning scrutiny, pupil and teacher voice survey and lesson observations.
