Reading and Phonics:
Phonics Play is offering a free subscription during this time. Here you can access great phonics based games and activities on your laptop, smart phone or tablet. Follow the link: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/
Here is a list of ‘Common Exception Words’. This just means words that you have to sight read, you can’t break them down using phonics. Work on 6 words at a time until the children are confident to read and write them.
Games: Put them on pieces of paper and hide them around the house; write them in chalk and ask the children to jump on each one; show them a word for 2 seconds then hide it and they try to write it; challenge them to make the words out of alphabet spaghetti or play dough; write them on a whiteboard and they have to copy then rub off and write again. What other ideas have you tried?
Singing and Stories:
One of our favourite authors Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo, Smartest Giant in Town, Stickman) has turned lots of our favourite stories into songs. These can be listened to through our website – some even teach Makaton signs! See how many you can learn.
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler have also slightly altered some of our famous stories to spread the ‘social distancing’ message in a light-hearted way. These could be discussed as a family and talk about how the characters might be feeling and why it is important to socially distance.
